Rockin’ with Spirit 2017

Reflecting on our First Five Years!

Tickets available at the Capital City Country Club Door
on June 24th.
General Admission – Doors open at 6 PM

Four years ago in Asbury Park, New Jersey, the Spirit of a Child Foundation held its inaugural “Rockin’with Spirit” benefit concert. We featured the Marshall Tucker Band and our good friends Donovan Chapman with his band and the Nick Clemons Band as the opening acts. Expectations were high and the bands put on a great show. We learned a lot from that first event and carried to the foundation’s new hometown of Tallahassee, Florida, where new friends and families have truly embraced us. We are amazed and thankful for all the support enabling “Rockin’ with Spirit” to slowly and steadily grow into a viable fundraising event that’s helping us help families grow stronger.

The five-year anniversary of “Rockin’ with Spirit” is the first in what we hope to be many more achievements for the foundation. A “Spirit” that not only brings out the generosity and good in people, but celebrates life through music and continually grows our families well into the future.
There are so many friends and family to thank and not enough space, so let’s keep it simple — Catch the Spirit and strive for another five!

Featured Headliner

Tom & The Cats have been playing music together for more than 30 years. The group began in 1978, and it’s hard to believe the members are still having a load of fun playing together. So well-known in the local community, the Tallahassee Democrat has referred to them as “local legends.” And legends they are! The band is made up of the eight coolest cats in town:

Tommy Brown – Lead Singer
Tom “Doc” Bevis – Pedal Steel & Dobro Richard Bevis – Drums
Jim McRae – Sax
Jimmy Graham – Keyboards and vocals

JimBo St. John – Bass
Dickie Hosford – Guitar, vocals, cowbell Steve Taff – Guitar, vocals
Jim Apgar – Soundman, vocals

The band has opened for The Drifters, The Coasters, The Greg Allman Band, Percy Sledge, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, The Judds, The Bellamy Brothers, and Hank Williams Jr. and built its reputation on the fact that “it ain’t nothing but a party” every time they play. Their sound today is bigger and better than ever and they look forward to rockin’ for years to come. Ranging from 8 to 80 and coming from all walks of life, they consider their fans the greatest reason for the band’s longevity and being the best party band in the area. Featured Performer

Featuring two guitars, keyboard, bass and drums, the Low Flying Planes (the Planes) took off 20 years ago, as an “all originals” group with 70 original tunes and two albums.
Ten years later, the Planes migrated to Tallahassee’s party scene and today deliver high-energy fun blended with classic rock at festivals, weddings, fundraisers and celebrations of every kind. It’s music with a purpose — an eclectic mix of rhythm and blues blended with funk, jazz, rock, country and boogie influences – all for your good time!

Lead/rhythm guitarist Everett Teague has a master’s degree and received seven athletic scholarships to various colleges. Keyboardist Carry Moon has two master’s degrees, which – along with a pronounced tendency to entertain – bode well for this partying musical troupe. The aeronautical connection comes from front man Randy Hock, who not only plays lead guitar, slide and mandolin, but is also a licensed pilot. Bobby Adams, retired from the Air Force, plays bass guitar and was a Leon High School quarterback drafted by the University of Florida. Drummer Scott Johnson is Randy’s wing man – keeping the beat and providing all the vocal harmonies.
Once you hear the Planes, you’ll understand what the buzz is all about. It’s not just music; it’s an experience you won’t forget. So fasten your seat belts, put your seat backs in their full and upright position, and prepare to take off with the LOW FLYING PLANES! Find out more about the band at http://www.lowflyingplanes.com.
